Emergency Survival – Gunshot Wounds

September 5th, 2010

emergency survivalAs you might imagine, getting shot by a gun is painful and dangerous, though, if you live in Miami or Los Angeles, not all that uncommon. What can you do for the gun shot victim in the immediate aftermath of the incident? Here are some emergency survival tips for that very scenario.

Medical Attention: Your first order of business should be to get the victim in front of a doctor as soon as possible. Whatever else you might do to stabilize the wound, don’t let the focus shift from finding competent medical care. The faster you do so, the better the chances for survival. However, for various reasons, this might not always be an option.

Secure the Area: If there is still live fire in the area, obviously you want to get the victim as far away from flying bullets as possible, to reduce the chances of being shot again. The only thing worse than one gunshot wound is two…or three…or four. You get the idea. Likewise, if the victim was armed, move the gun out of reach and point it in a safe direction where an accidental discharge won’t strike him again. Remember, bullets can ricochet. At this point, emergency survival depends upon paying attention to the small details.

Immobilize the Victim: Keep the victim still. Lightly support the head and keep it in alignment with the body. This helps to not further aggravate injuries.

Breathing: If the victim is unconscious, check that he is breathing. If not, let’s hope you know CPR because now would be a good time to administer it. Chest wounds can be problematical with CPR. If this is the case, you seriously should be thinking about finding a doctor.

Almost 70% of gunshot victims survive. Head and heart wounds are the most dangerous. Next time we’ll discuss the emergency survival techniques for stopping or slowing bleeding in the absence of a physician.

Birthers Aren’t Going Away

September 2nd, 2010

birther movementIn case you haven’t heard, the birther movement is still going strong and presently trying to align itself with the Tea Party. You may have first heard birthers kicking up a fuss in the final months of the 2008 presidential campaign, when allegations were made that Barack Obama was not a natural born citizen of the United States and, as such, was prevented by the United States Constitution from holding the office of President.

This is the same law that has thwarted the presidential ambitions of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger from running for that office, though recent mis-steps out west might make it difficult for Arnie to be elected dogcatcher.

But the birther movement is still hanging around, still proclaiming that we have a false president, a fact “proven” by various records they claim to have uncovered that show Obama as sometimes a British citizen and sometimes a Kenyan. As such, according to the movement, we currently have no legal president or Commander-in-Chief.

To us at Holistic Survival, the birther movement has a valid point that we are in the midst of a constitutional crisis, though the point doesn’t have as much to do with where Obama was born as that he is, indeed, on an apparent crusade to overturn most of the Bill of Rights, specifically the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 10th, and 13th amendments. How is he doing this? Mainly by filling appointed positions with people adverse to the ideals of America. His fiat actions related to bailouts and the healthcare system threaten to destroy our economic viability. Whether he was born in Africa or on Mars doesn’t matter as much as where he’s taking us.

Survival Books Worth the Paper They’re Printed On

September 1st, 2010

survival booksYou won’t live long enough to read all the survival books out there, so why not focus on the few that deliver a legitimate bang for the buck? There are three general categories Holistic Survival likes, each with it’s own strength, though you might want to steer clear of those claiming to teach you how to conquer a world gone mad with nothing but a toothpick and pen light. We’re into realism here and recommend the following as survival books that might really help you.

Military Manuals: True, these are official government publications and we are normally loathe to believe anything from that source but…an ungodly amount of research goes into these books and the methods have been put to the ultimate test in battle. Another thing to keep in mind is that military manuals offer clear, actionable advice. The government has a vested interest in keeping their soldiers alive in the field. A random guide of edible herbs by Dude I’ve Never Heard Of would give us pause to consider.

Survivalist Books: While it’s true that a large section of books by survivalists should be taken with a boulder of salt, there is real gold to be found there as well. Take a pass on sensational titles like How to Survive a Zombie Invasion and, instead, look for legitimate books by people who have actually survived the situation they’re writing about.

Fiction: Books like The Road by Cormac McCarthy and some other end of the world scenarios make excellent chances to play “what if” games with yourself. How would react in a similar situation? While some of the ways fictional characters manage to escape death are not believable, and you shouldn’t follow their actions verbatim, almost any situation depicted could happen…some day…maybe.

These are our category picks for survival books to put on your shelf and pass around to those you love and want to protect. Leave the zombie killing guide for someone else.

This Survival Tool is Cool Beyond Belief

August 31st, 2010

survival toolThinking of a survival tool often conjures images of an emergency ax, generator, shotgun, or first aid kit. One of the easiest to carry, and possibly most helpful, is the diminutive size of a credit card but, unlike a credit card, it won’t run up a mountain of bad debt, destroy your ability to own a house, and leave you on skid row with an alcohol problem. We’ll call this handy little gadget the credit card survival tool or CCST because we can never get enough of spiffy acronyms.

Picture the CCST. It is the length, width, and slightly thicker than your standard credit card, made from stainless steel and, incredibly, contains the following: can opener, knife, screw driver, ruler, cap opener, four position wrench, saw blade, ruler…

Hard to imagine a survival tool so small can contain so many handy options. In this case, you probably need to see it to believe it. Click the link below to see the CCST up close and personal. Our thanks to CoolTools website for the info.

See the Cool Survival Tool

According to CoolTools, the CCST is available for about $4 from Amazon. How many times on a daily basis do you find yourself searching the house and high and low for some piddly little tool and you can’t find it? Now it can be as close as your wallet. Whether an honest-to-goodness survival situation or simply to make quick emergency repairs, we think this is the handiest idea we’ve seen in a while.

And here’s the Holistic Survival incredibly useful tip of the day: Why not throw out a credit card or two and replace them with a CCST?

School Survival Guide

August 29th, 2010

survival guideChildren spend a large part of their day away from parental protection, in a little tornado of chaos we at Holistic Survival like to call the school system. It only makes sense to teach them how to survive that particular environment because one only has to review the past decade’s list of school shootings to realize the mean streets of America have settled in the education system. Here’s a quick school survival guide, not exhaustive, but intended to get you thinking in the right direction.

When confronted by an aggressor in the movies, the plucky hero or heroine fight back with a jab to the eye with a key chain or well-placed kick in the groin. In real life, unless you are particularly trained in self defense tactics, this usually only serves to antagonize the aggressor. Your best bet is to get away. Do what you can to de-escalate the situation and get the heck out of there. Find other people quickly. One of the best ways to de-escalate a tense situation is to not get angry. Don’t rebut a bully’s taunts or insults. Use mis-direction like, “Is that Principal Skinner headed this way?”

The best school survival guide tactic is to avoid the situation before it ever arises. Your intuition tells you a lot if you pay attention. Feel like someone’s watching you exercise by yourself on the track? Maybe the shifty guy in the back corner of the elevator raises the hair on the back of your neck. Use your brain! Don’t get in the elevator.

Here are a few basic precautions to take:

1. Avoid shortcuts through isolated areas
2. Travel in a group at night
3. Make sure friends and parents know your schedule
4. Carry a cell phone
5. Be willing to report crimes in your school to police

Is this school survival guide everything your kid needs to know about staying safe while they learn? Of course not. Our world is much darker than that but it is a start. Parents…your turn now.

Which Gun for Home Defense?

August 24th, 2010

While we at Holistic Survival think owning a gun for defense of your home us a great idea, please don’t head down to your local pawn shop to buy the biggest, baddest on the block just yet. There are a few factors you should take into consideration before purchasing a handgun, especially if you’re unfamiliar with weapons.

Local Jurisdiction Laws
Some areas are quite oppressive when it comes to regulating what type of gun a citizen may possess. Not to name Orwellian names but the average citizen can’t own any type of handgun in Morton, IL. And states like New Jersey and New York aren’t much better. While the moral quandary of whether to ignore local laws is one you must resolve alone, the real issue is how can you practice with the darn thing while living in constant fear about being caught with an illegal weapon. Might be a good time to move to a place in America that still upholds the Constitution.

Social Environment
It makes a difference whether you live in a rural farmhouse or skyscraper apartment building. In the latter there is a real danger of over-penetration if you choose the wrong weapon. No one wants the bullet to go through the intruder, out his backside, and through the walls of the next three apartments down the hallway. A gun for defense in an apartment needs maximum stopping power over a short range – like a short barreled shotgun loaded with large birdshot. Excellent stopping power for close encounters but it disperses quickly and isn’t likely to injure innocent bystanders. In the boonies, where you might be apt to engage human or animal predators long distance, a high-powered deer rifle is a better choice.

Level of Experience
How comfortable are you with firearms? This is a critical question. If the answer is, “Not very,” consider buying a gun for defense with a minimum of controls and doesn’t require precise aiming to do the job. A double-action revolver or pump action shotgun is simple…dead simple to the would be bad guy.

#29 – Genetically Modified Food: What It Means To Your Health (Or Sickness)

August 19th, 2010

Jason talks with Jeffrey Smith from the Institute for Responsible Technology in Iowa.  As an international bestselling author and independent filmmaker Jeffrey M. Smith is the leading spokesperson on the health dangers of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).  More at http://www.holisticsurvival.com/category/audio-podcast/ and on iTunes. His meticulously researched books and films document how the world’s most powerful Ag biotech companies bluff and mislead safety officials and critics to put the health of society at risk.

His first book Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods You’re Eating, became the world’s best-selling and # 1 rated book on GMOs. His second book, Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods, is the authoritative work on GMO health dangers. It includes 65 health dangers, linking GMOs in our food to toxic and allergic reactions, infertility, and damage to virtually every internal organ studied in lab animals. The book expertly summarizes why the safety assessments conducted by the FDA and regulators worldwide teeter on a foundation of outdated science and false assumptions, and why GM foods must urgently become our nation’s top food safety priority. Former UK environment minister says the revelations in Genetic Roulette may “change the global course of events this century.”

Mr. Smith has counseled world leaders from every continent, campaigned to end the use of genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH or rbST), and influenced the first state laws in the United States regulating GMOs. A riveting keynote speaker and popular guest on TV shows worldwide, he has lectured in 30 countries and has been quoted by government leaders and hundreds of media outlets including, The New York Times, Washington Post, BBC World Service, Huffington Post, Nature, The Independent, Daily Telegraph, New Scientist, The Times (London), Associated Press, Reuters News Service, LA Times, Time Magazine and Genetic Engineering News.

Former US National Institutes of Health scientist Candace Pert describes Jeffrey as “the leading world expert in the understanding and communication of the health issues surrounding genetically modified foods.”

Mr. Smith has united leaders to support The Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, a revolutionary industry and consumer movement to remove GMOs from the US food supply. He is the executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, producer of the films Hidden Dangers in Kids’ Meals and Your Milk on Drugs—Just Say No!, writes an internationally syndicated column, Spilling the Beans, has a regular blog on the popular Huffington Post, and is followed on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Mr. Smith lives with his wife in Iowa, surrounded by genetically modified soybeans and corn.

The Institute also informs policy makers and the public around the world about the risks and impacts of GMOs on health, environment,  agriculture, the global economy, and the problems
associated with current research, regulation, corporate practices, and reporting.

Deflation and Economic Survival

August 19th, 2010

economic survivalWhile our analysts believe beyond a shadow of doubt that the long term outlook for the world economy is inflationary, it behooves the modern survivalist to understand the idea of deflation and especially the risks related to economic survival. Most of us understand that inflation leads to ever-increasing prices of goods and a lessening of purchasing power. Therefore, it stands to reason that deflation means essentially the opposite. True statement!

But what is the effect of deflation and why do pasty men at desks under fluorescent light bulbs make themselves sick in the stomach at the prospect of prices falling? Well, it goes something like this. A deflationary cycle means people aren’t so quick to whip out the credit card or plunk down hard-earned dollaristas on the retail counter. The result is prices fall in the face of softening demand. Production grinds to a halt because nothing is flying off the shelves. Consumers see prices falling and decide to wait on additional purchases in the belief they will fall further.

Investors and buyers hoard currency rather than invest it because they don’t trust even the most solid of securities to maintain their value, much less to increase. Historically not all periods of deflation lead to poor economic growth but one sticks in our collective consciousness – The Great Depression. Ergo, everyone hears the word “deflation” and hunkers to the floor solely concerned with their own economic survival.

Your real enemy is the spectre of inflation lurking just around the corner. That’s the beast that may destroy your portfolio unless you do something drastic. Our suggestion: get out of stocks as much as is feasible and into income property investments, which is the only asset that profits from inflation. Your future economic survival may truly depend on action taken now.

The Holistic Survival Podcast

August 14th, 2010

survival podcastThe Holistic Survival Podcast is evolving in response to what we see as a society going through extremely “uncertain” times. Uncertain is putting it mildly. We stand here in the early years of the 21st century and watch our politicians stupidly put into motion the very same economic strategies that are in the process of unraveling entire European countries. An orderly society depends upon people having food, drink, shelter, jobs and enough spending money to have a little fun every now and then.

Society is not strengthened by massive foreclosures, raging unemployment, government bailouts of fat cat corporate companies, and a cavalier attitude towards Joe and Jane Six Pack’s troubles. The bad news is we’re marching toward socialism, financial collapse or both. The good news is that you can prepare your family for any eventuality. That’s what our survival podcast is about.

At Holistic Survival, we’re aware that the disintegration of our way of life may come in bits and pieces and it may never hit rock bottom in a fighting-in-the-streets sort of way. It might start with the steady erosion of your savings, investments, and buying power through the insidious nature of inflation. Actually, there’s no “might” about it. This has been under way for a while and won’t be changing as long as the current crop of brainiac Federal politicians and economists are in charge.

Newsflash: the next decision makers, no matter their political affiliation, aren’t likely to be any better. The bottom line is that the sooner you start regularly listening to the Holistic Survival Podcast, the better your chance of protecting the people, places and profits you care about.

Previously, Greenhut was deputy editor and columnist for The Orange County Register in Santa Ana, Calif. He joined the Register’s editorial page staff in 1998, after serving as editorial page editor of The Lima News, a daily newspaper in northwest Ohio. Both newspapers are owned by Irvine-based Freedom Communications. He is author of the 2004 book, “Abuse of Power: How the Government Misuses Eminent Domain.” His columns have been published in newspapers across the country including the Wall Street Journal.

Survival Preparedness Means a Bug Out Vehicle

August 10th, 2010

survival preparednessThe Bug Out Vehicle (BOV) is an area of survival preparedness often overlooked. High gas prices have driven the average motorist to opt for tiny pieces of rolling plastic as transportation, which is fine until you need something to power your family out of a natural disaster or emergency situation. Consider keeping an older truck or vehicle not so reliant on modern computer systems, which could be fried in the event of an electromagnetic pulse. The capability of going off-road in four-wheel drive could be handy as well.

Survival preparedness means the BOV is well-maintained and ready to go at all times. First, plan on having essential vehicle fluids onboard: motor oil, transmission fluid, anti-freeze, brake fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. Keep five gallons of gas nearby but never in the vehicle itself unless you are evacuating. Next comes basic tools like a shovel, hammer, both Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, sockets and wrenches, pliers, duct tape, electrical tape, first aid kits and emergency flares.

Check and rotate the supplies in your BOV every quarter or to coincide with the change of seasons. Different weather requires different gear. Include bedding, tents, clothing, boots, tarps, ropes, a few gallons of water and purification tablets, matches, and cookware. Candles would be a good idea as well. Keep 72 hours worth of food for the family stored in the BOV. Meals Ready to Eat are a good option but there are others.

With such thorough survival preparedness and stocking the bug out vehicle with all these supplies, the question becomes where will you put the people? That’s easily answered. Either make sure it’s a big vehicle, pack carefully, or both.

Urban Survival at its Simplest

August 10th, 2010

urban survivalCity dwellers take heart. You may not have acres of woods teeming with deer and bunnies ripe for shooting in the event of an emergency situation or upheaval in society but you can still make out fine if you take advantage of these three simple urban survival tips.

The Get Home Bag

Not to be confused with the Bug Out Bag, the Get Home Bag (GHB) is stored at your office or place of work and contains specific tools to get you out of the building alive if, heaven forbid, a World Trade Center type event took place. While others are wondering around in shock, you’ll be staying alive. Your GHB should include a small prybar, water, breathing masks, flashlight, radio, and perhaps shoes for what might be a very long walk home.

Bug Out Plan
Assume the city has deteriorated into dangerous levels of chaos not fit for man nor beast. Urban survival dictates that you need to get out immediately. When the realization first strikes that the sh*! has hit the fan is not the time to start assembling your bug out plan. Too late. You need to know where you’re going and the best way to get there, assuming highways might be impassable and driving is out of the question. Make sure everyone in the family knows the rendezvous point and how to get there from work, school, and home.

Bug In Plan
Maybe you arrive back at home and decide, though things are bad, they’re not bad enough to bug out yet. That means you need to be ready to bug in. Assume you can’t leave your home for any reason for a period of time. Better have made urban survival preparations to survive at home for a while. It’s the little things that will trip you up. Consider all modern amenities have gone way – no electricity means no refrigerator. Food, water, and protection should be your first order of business. Pretend like you’re designing your own little self sufficient Fortress of Solitude.

Basic Survival Skills for Almost Anything

August 8th, 2010

survival skillsWhen you’re interested in a topic and break it down piece by piece, day after day, it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture. That’s why Holistic Survival likes to take a “back to basics” approach every now and then to review the essential survival skills needed to make it through almost any emergency situation. Here are our four favorites in no particular order.

1. Fire: Knowing how to build a fire is one of the most critical survival skills you can have. It’s that simple. Fire provides warmth, light, and comfort, not to mention the ability to progress beyond closing your eyes and gulping down chunks of raw rabbit. Don’t underestimate the psychological value of a cooked meal. Always have at least two or three ways to start a fire available in your supplies. Waterproof matches, a butane lighter, and magnesium fire starter are good options.

2. Shelter: Shelter begins with the clothes you wear. Be prepared to dress in layers for ultimate warmth and temperature control. Peel down when you’re hot and add more when you’re cold. After clothing, the survival skills of building a lean-to or hut come into play. Your creativity is the only limit here, though a good tarp can go a long way toward keeping the outdoors firmly where it belongs – outside.

3. Signaling: Critical for contacting people over a distance when verbal communication is impossible. Fire, smoke, flashlights, bright clothing, mirrors, and whistles are just a few of the ways to draw attention to your plight. Remember that three of anything (gunshots, whistles, etc) is the universal cry for help.

4. Food and Water: When preparing for survival, always keep more of this on hand than you think is necessary. Learn how to ration both, but keep in mind you can live for days without food. A few days without water will dramatically effect your health and attitude.

Okay, here’s the numero uno of all survival skills – having the foresight to plan ahead for emergency situations. Without that, the rest won’t do you a bit of good.

Summer Emergency Survival

August 7th, 2010

emergency survivalSummer heat claims an average of 200 lives each year. We’re going out on a limb to guess that the majority could be prevented through basic emergency survival tactics, but the kind of sweltering weather that can cause exhaustion or stroke is sneaky. During the months of June, July, and August, crippling heat waves can happen almost anywhere. There are the usual geographic suspects of southern California, the desert southwest, Texas, the deep south, and Florida, but recent years have seen the possibility arise in places like Chicago or New York City also.

There are specific steps you can take to prevent heat injuries like sunburn, heat cramps, and the aforementioned heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Here are a few:

1. 10 am to 3 pm is when the sun’s rays are at their peak of destructive power. A word to the wise is avoid exposure during that time frame if you can.

2. If you make a living as a construction worker, this advice might be hard to implement, but reduce physical activity if you can.

3. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing outdoors. Lighter colors reflect instead of absorb heat, helping your body to avoid overheating.

4. Drink plenty of fluids, 8 to 10 glasses a day recommended, more if you’re exercising or working outside.

5. Use a sunscreen with a protection factor of at least SPF 15 if you’re out in the sun.

The term emergency survival conjures memories of national emergencies and natural disasters. The truth is you can suffer serious medical issues just as easily from simple sunlight. Probably the most serious heat exposure to be aware of is heat stroke, when the body stops sweating but body temperature continues to rise. Learn to recognize symptoms like headache, nausea, vomiting, eye problems, and even unconsciousness. Heat exhaustion is a medical emergency! Call 9-1-1.

Deconstructing the Orwellian Society

August 6th, 2010

Orwellian‘Round the internet and sometimes even within the confines of Holistic Survival, one sees a reference to something as being “Orwellian.” Most people with a hazy memory of high school English could peg the word as relating to influential English writer, George Orwell, but others might not give a flying rat’s rear end about the word; they just want to bring down Big Government. Whoa there, big boy. Simmer down for minute.

Ignorance is not a crime but refusing to fix it should be.

Here’s a quick primer on “Orwellian.” The term refers to a recurring theme in Mr. Orwell’s books, specifically Animal Farm and 1984, the latter from which the adjective Orwellian arises, a book depicting how the government controls thought by controlling language and making certain ideas literally unthinkable – a society where the citizens are kept docile through the dissemination of misinformation and a supreme dictator known as Big Brother watches over everyone, even within the “privacy” of one’s home.

The word Orwellian is not a intended to be complimentary in any sense. Now when you see it tossed around the internet you’ll know exactly what it refers to. Next on our list of most popular paranoid references is “Machiavellian,” but that’s a topic for another day. Who’s to say what paranoid really is anyway? Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean people aren’t out to get you.

Take Care of Beans, Bullets, and Band-Aids for City Survival

August 4th, 2010

city survivalThough city survival during emergency conditions is a little more problematical than the country, it can still be done. With less storage space, it requires a bit more creativity to figure out where to stash everything but the process remains the same. You’re going to need to take care of your beans, bullets, and Band-Aids. Put another way – food, protection, and first aid.

Beans: If the food supply in your city was suddenly interrupted in a major way, such as no food on grocery store shelves, you’re going to be in a world of hurt if you’re not prepared with a food stock of your own. The problem arises if you live in a one bedroom, or worse, studio apartment. Not much room to stash a food supply. Suggestion? City survival requires creativity. You can stuff a bunch of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) under a bed, in a closet, or even in the trunk of your car. Maybe even consider a self-storage unit within walking distance. The stackability and durability of MREs makes them a handy choice those with little additional storage space. Tasty? Not especially. But they’ll keep you alive.

Bullets: We’ve suggested the following before in these pages. There’s really no need to keep an entire arsenal tucked away for personal defense. A pistol and rifle should do nicely. One for close range and the other to reach out and touch someone from farther away, or for game hunting. What you need to stock up on is ammunition because, without that, your firearm is a useless chunk of metal.

Band-Aids: A good first aid kit is a no-brainer. If you think you don’t have space for one in your apartment, you’re wrong. Make space. If there is no food on the grocery shelves, chances are, there are no medical supplies either. You might not feel up to performing major surgery but you can accomplish a lot with a good supply of Band-Aids, tape, aspirin, splints, rubbing alcohol, etc.

There you go. City survival is just like country survival, only with less space. The basics are still the same, you just have to figure out where to put them. Might be worth upgrading to a larger apartment and using one room for “Survivor Central.”

Just an idea.

Are We Protecting People by Building Prisons?

August 2nd, 2010

protecting peopleIn the early days of his governorship, Arnold Schwarzenegger directed the construction of two prisons to accommodate the overcrowding. Problem was that since 1980 California has built 20 prisons but the inmate population has increased fivefold. At this rate, using this philosophy, the problem of protecting people by incarcerating others will be cured…uh…never.

Perhaps its not that we should keep following this strategic policy until every other building in the United States is a prison. Perhaps rather we should take a look at what we’re putting people into jail for and consider whether or not it’s a valid reason. There is nothing to suggest that the United States is a more criminal society than the rest of the world but we’ve just got too dang many laws.

It used to be legal to walk into a drug store and buy cocaine or heroin, then the early 20th century saw the rise of the “Progressive” movement in government, which resulted in a national war on drugs. Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policy was the capstone on the lunacy when marijuana was deemed illegal.

The incredible violence of the drug culture is a direct result of the federal government’s attempt to eradicate it. Didn’t we learn anything from Prohibition? The only thing it did was create a herd of below-the-radar speakeasies. Take away the illegality of drug use/sales and the profit motive largely goes away. But the Fed continues to create crime and overfill our prisons under the auspice of protecting people from themselves.

Hmm, when was the last time we had an all out crime war between aspirin cartels?

Alternative Therapies for Immune System Diseases

July 31st, 2010

alternative therapiesThe problem with the massive and sudden downfall of society is that millions of Americans are going to be suddenly without their prescription medications and that’s going to leave those unfamiliar with alternative therapies in a world of hurt. For anyone who has been to the doctor lately, you know what we’re talking about. A handful of powerful prescriptions with sometimes yucky side effects is the standard medical response to any patient’s complaint.

Granted, modern drugs routinely alleviate symptoms of arthritis, heart ailments, diabetes, ear infections, toothaches, cancers, allergies, and more to an amazing degree. But what if they suddenly weren’t available? If you’re relying upon them completely for your health, you’re going to be in a world of hurt when they vanish.

For this reason, Holistic Survival thinks it’s a DARN good idea to familiarize yourself with alternative therapies, especially if you have a chronic health condition. While we could spend the rest of our lives arguing the relative merits of the various types of healing and still not arrive at a meeting of the minds, surely everyone could agree that a basically healthy immune system trumps a weak one any day. With such as diseases as arthritis, diabetes, and more being traced to a faulty immune system, why not take advantage of a couple thousand years of Eastern healing and research areas like aromatherapy, acupunture/acupressure, herbal formulas, etc?

Doesn’t mean you have to throw your half full bottle of Eradicade out the window immediately, but it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for the day when you drive up to your local pharmacy and they have nothing on the shelves. That is not the time to begin pondering alternative therapies.

Meet Alexis de Tocqueville

July 21st, 2010

Alexis de TocqevilleAlexis de Tocqueville was a French aristocrat who slummed in America for 9 months during 1831. The resulting two volume set of his observations, Democracy in America, is still lauded as a seminal work for it’s insight into Jacksonian America. If you’re needing a good idea or two to stick in your brainpan, ponder the following Tocqueville quotes:

1. A democratic government is the only one in which those who vote for a tax can escape the obligation to pay it.
2. Americans are so enamored of equality that they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.
3. As one digs deeper into the national character of the Americans, one sees that they have sought the value of everything in this world only in the answer to this single question: how much money will it bring in?
4. In the United States, the majority undertakes to supply a multitude of ready-made opinions for the use of individuals, who are thus relieved from the necessity of forming opinions of their own.

As a classical liberal thinker, Tocqueville played the role of a detached social scientist in America, and certainly came up with a few ideas that make you go “hmm,” even today. He viewed democracy as an equation that constantly sought to balance liberty and equality, and individual versus community. To gain an understanding of where America has been and where it might be going, you could do worse than versing yourself in a Tocqueville-ism or two.

Martial Arts expert, Michael Pace shares his self-defense techniques on the ‘Holistic Survival Show’

July 19th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

How to defend yourself against a person with a gunIrvine, California – July 19, 2010 – Host of the Holistic Survival Show, Jason Hartman, interviews self-defense and martial arts expert, Michael Pace during episode seven. During the episode, Pace shares the techniques he teaches and offers his self-defense recommendations for any attack.

Due to his beliefs that traditional techniques are not effective, Pace has built his own system which takes many areas of martial arts into consideration. He believes that each person should have basic self-defense training in order to defend themselves in dangerous situations.

Pace’s techniques, which are taught in his Self-Defense 101 series, focus on the adrenal rush as one of the main elements of self-defense. Speaking to the negative effects of adrenal rush, Pace states, “Some of the effects of the adrenal rush are that you get tunnel vision, so your vision to the peripheral really is eliminated or minimized greatly. You also lose fine motor coordination. You get the shakes. You feel really shaky inside. You lose a good amount of cognitive thinking, so you don’t necessarily have the resources to dig deep within your mind to choose and pick what you’re going to do.” Contrary to his statement, Pace also believes an adrenal rush can also work in support of you as much as it can work against you in a dangerous situation; nevertheless, he insists that training and preparation are major factors surviving unsafe encounters.

During the interview, Hartman asks Pace for his take on carrying pepper spray or mace. Pace replies, “The problem with most of these [weapons] is that you just don’t have them ready and available.”

Pace suggests using skills such as elbow strikes, groin kicks, palm-heel strikes and shark-attacks as self-defense techniques in any dangerous situation. Realizing it may be difficult to create a distinct image for these moves via the podcast episode, Pace tells the audience, “You want to put yourself in the best position, give yourself the best odds to escape an attack. You want to rely on things that are almost sure to happen every time.”

Matthew Stein, ‘We can change the course of the world from its current course of collapse to a course of sustainability’

July 12th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Author Matthew Stein "When Technology FailsIrvine, California – July 12, 2010 – During episode five of the Holistic Survival Show, Jason Hartman interviews Matthew Stein, author of “When Technology Fails.” The forty-eight minute podcast dives into the concepts Stein speaks on in his book, which is a 493 page “bible” for sustainable living. As he explains in his book, Stein wanted to tell the world where we were headed and what we can do about it collectively to sustain healthy living. Stein’s book covers many areas including, self-reliance, present trends and possible futures, supplies and preparations, emergency measures for survival, when high tech medicine fails, first aid, shelter and buildings, food, growing, foraging, hunting, storing and water resources.

As a graduate from MIT in mechanical engineering, Stein had little expertise in this particular area, and it was a vision that guided him to write this book and share it with the world. “I’ve always considered myself to be quite ecologically aware, and yet, as I dove into these deep, heavy writings, I realized that our world is much, much closer to collapse, to systemic collapse, than I had previously imagined.”

Stein’s definitive message throughout his book is that if we, as human beings, continue with business as usual, we will eventually destroy our planet. Stein goes on to explain, “We can individually do our best to change things and how we can collectively shift and change the course of the world from its current course of collapse to a course of sustainability.”

Throughout the course of the interview, Stein manages to speak on the subjects of the global economy, viruses and medical treatment, tax structures, population, atmospheric changes and technology.

On the concept of population control, Stein offers his thoughts. “If we don’t control population, then starvation, death, famine, terrorism, all of those things will do it for us and that’s not a happy way.” Stein believes that a sustainable method of controlling global population is to grant Third-World countries with the technology and education to control family sizes.

A dead soldier’s opinion

July 12th, 2010

Douglas MacArthurNot just any soldier but the renowned, General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Pacific Fleet during World War II had the following to say about our beloved federal government frequent attempts to pretend that the very survival of our nation is at stake:

“Always there has been some terrible evil at home or some monstrous foreign power that was going to gobble us up if we did not blindly rally behind it. Our government has kept us in a perpetual state of fear – kept us in a continuous stampede of patriotic fervor – with the cry of grave national emergency.”

Those words ring true today, though recent events seem aimed at a federal power grab of historic proportions. Bailing out Wall Street because certain corporations are “too big to fail.” For all practical purposes assuming control of the auto industry to insure it’s survival. Isn’t that what Hugo Chavez did in Venezuela? We’ve got to stop drilling for oil anywhere in the United States in case some is accidentally spilled.

The politics of fear continues unabated. Makes little difference whether there’s a Republican or Democrat currently warming the Oval Office seat at 1600 Pennsylvania. As a tool of the political class, this tactic transcends party lines, and is used as a not-so-subtle ploy of misdirection to keep the populace worked into a frenzy about certain things while ignoring certain others.

And keep in mind, for mass mind control, there’s nothing better than television! Holistic Survival thinks that particular dead soldier hit the nail on the head.

‘Holistic Survival Show’ Guest, Karen Varner on the Importance of Food Preparedness during Uncertain Times

July 10th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

Bulk food items stored in pantry for emergenciesIrvine, California – July 10, 2010 – Food preparedness consultant, Karen Varner, joins the Holistic Survival Show with Jason Hartman on episode four. During the interview, Karen engages listeners with some tips on how to prepare a food supply, store food and water supplies, and know what quantities are needed for a family during an emergency.

Opening the interview, Varner speaks on food storage kits and the contents that ought to be included, which are, rice, beans, grains, fruits. As an example of what humans can live off of, Varner states, “Ethiopians eat nothing but wheat three times a day. Many third world countries survive on rice and beans… the cheapest way to go is to just buy whole grains, and we can survive on bread and water.”

When asked about how to develop a sufficient food supply for a family, Varner responded, “Buy a case if you can, and a can if you can’t,” meaning that buying extra items each time, as bulk items are on sale, will help gradually build the family food supply for emergencies.

Once speaking about shelf-life, host, Jason Hartman asked about the move from “Best By” dates to “Sell By” dates, and why most manufacturers no longer use the “Best By” label. Karen clarifies that manufacturers are planning for worst-case scenarios and that they are really “covering their own butts.”

Water is extremely important in the first 72 hours, more so than food during this period of time. Varner states that each person should have at least one gallon a day per person just for cooking, and suggests a good filter to purify the water.

Concluding the episode, Hartman asks, “Anything on catching rainwater? Do you deal with that at all?” Varner responds, “I live in Utah – they were prosecuting someone for catching their own rainwater… they caught it and were using it. The city said that water runs off and down into the drain and they were stealing it from the city!”

Michael Panzner on the ‘Holistic Survival Show,’ ‘The world is going to become less cooperative and less flat’

July 8th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

Homeless man sitting on bench with sleeping backIrvine, California – July 8, 2010 – Episode three of the Holistic Survival Show includes Michael Panzner, author of “Financial Armageddon” and “When Giants Fall.” Panzner clarifies what he believes the future will looks like for most Americans after the “economic unraveling” has taken place. Individual and government debt, government guarantees, the retirement system and derivatives are believed, by Panzner, to be the four major financial problems looming on the horizon.

Panzner’s gloomy outlook on America’s future begins to come clear towards the middle of the episode when he states, “The resources that we have come to think are almost limitless, like food and water, as well as energy and other commodities aren’t limitless, and that there’s going to be more conflict and more of a grab for people to make sure they have their share… as a result, the world is going to become less cooperative and less flat,” referring to the best-selling book, “The World is Flat.”

He goes on to explain that American’s may even have the kind of environment you see in poorer countries where there is a community of close friends, family and neighbors; those you can trust, and those you cannot.

When asked about what another Great Depression would look like in modern day, Panzner states, “You could very easily get to a situation, for example, where money becomes increasingly tight, so you start to see things break down. Roads break down because they’re not being maintained…The cost of energy becomes prohibitive, so certain parts of the South, Southwest in particular, become ghost towns. In total, it’s not going to be a pretty picture.”

Although a pessimistic view of the future, Panzner still hopes he is wrong about what is to come. He does feel the need of perspective in order to stay prepared and informed while keeping others informed about the potential “Financial Armageddon;” he urges others to do the same.

Food dehydration for dummies

July 7th, 2010

HolisticSurvival.comFood dehydration is an excellent method for adding to your long term food storage cache. But is it hard to do, and is there any nutrition left in the food when you’re done? The answers to those questions are “no” and “yes.” First, let’s define exactly what food dehydration is. It means exactly what you might think – removing the water from food. Normally hydrated food provides a moist environment for microorganisms and bacteria to flourish.

Remove the water and, voila, long-lasting, uncooked food ready for storage.

Some people worry that the dehydrating process removes most of the food’s nutritional value, but that is not the case. Those fears are more well-founded if you’re talking about commercially dried foods because, as might be expected, various chemicals and preservatives are added during that procedure. But when you set up your own food dehydration process at home, the end result is only slightly less nutritious than what you began with.

Dehydrated foods are quite safe to eat – safer probably than canning, where the moist environment sometimes results in botulism. There are a few ideas to remember about food hydrating that will keep the end product tasty and nutritious. Vitamin A is light sensitive, so foods containing it (carrots, peppers, mangoes) should be stored in the dark. The caloric value of dehydrated food remains the same, though often the taste is sweeter since water is removed and sugar becomes concentrated. Fiber and carbohydrate content are not affected.

What can be dried? Almost anything. Meats, vegetables, fruits, fish, herbs, flowers, and even frozen or canned foods. The bottom line is that dehydrating is a simple, expensive way to bolster your long term food storage.

Emergency Preparedness Expert, Greg Friese, Gives Listeners Tips on First Aid in Disastrous Situations

July 5th, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

Preparing for an emergencyEmergency ResponseIrvine, California – July 5, 2010 – Episode two of the Holistic Survival Show includes an interview with Greg Friese, Founder and President of Emergency Preparedness Systems, LLC. The interview, conducted by Jason Hartman, gives listeners tips and techniques on how to prepare for sudden emergencies and disasters.

“It’s helpful to take incremental steps in terms of individual and family preparedness. So for example, you’re about to become a parent for the first time… you don’t need to become a pediatrician, but you should know how to do infant CPR and that only takes a couple hours,” Friese says after being asked by Hartman on what sort of “realistic” preparation should take place in a family.

The theme of the episode, and of the Holistic Survival Show as a whole, is educating and preparing oneself for emergencies to reduce the fear and effect a disaster may have on you and your family. The episode focuses on taking an individual approach with the mentality that anyone, at anytime, could be in a situation where they may need to tend to an emergency.

In speaking about the natural disaster, Hurricane Katrina, Hartman states, “there was a complete lack of preparedness, and way too much interdependence and not enough independence.” Responding to Hartman, Friese states, “that’s why I would really advocate a set of incremental steps. Maybe you do one thing each month. You start with CPR this month and next month, you put some simple supplies together.”

Friese also advocates for ongoing emergency and first aid training. He believes education and training can have a positive effect on recognizing a life-threatening emergency when one is happening. Closing the episode, he suggests the American Heart Association and American Red Cross as great organizations to receive basic CPA and First Aid training.

Prepare like a pioneer

June 30th, 2010

Holistic Survival ShowThere is no doubt preparedness is expensive. Even if you have the very best of intentions to create your food cache, buy a generator, and the myriad of other equipment and supplies websites like Holistic Survival suggest, where’s the money going to come from? The reality of life is that you might not be able to afford to do it all at one time.

And while the primitive man or early American pioneer could survive well with nothing but a wagonload of supplies, modern man is not quite so skilled in making do from the environment. We’ve grown soft and used to convenience. When money is an object, it’s time to start getting creative. Learn how to adapt and overcome. Part of your preparedness should be to investigate such devices as a homemade stove. After all, there’s a good chance your microwave might not survive a social collapse and you don’t want to eat cold food for weeks or months.

Got a black wheelbarrow or tub made of high-density polyethylene? How about a piece of single pane glass? Put the food you want to heat up in the tub and lay the glass on top. Of course, a bright, sunny day helps immensely. It won’t take long for the temperature between the tub and glass to reach 200 degrees and it should hover around 250 degrees. There you go – instant oven. No electricity or wiring required.

This neat little outdoors trick will also work well as a food dehydrator. Preparedness like this requires you to think like a pioneer. You might be amazed how many “work around” solutions you can come up with using your old noggin. If you haven’t exercised the gray matter in a while, give it a try. See what you can come up with.
