Preparedness by the numbers

survivalAs humans, sometimes we put off a task forever if it seems too complicated to think about all at once. And if the proposed action doesn’t provide immediate critical benefit, so much more the temptation to wait until tomorrow or the year 2021. So it is with many well-intentioned people and preparation for (insert your favorite disaster scenario here).

Common complaints are “I don’t know where to start!” or “American Idol starts in ten minutes!”

Stop stressing. Take a step back and look at the big picture. There are big overall steps that need to be accomplished. Within each big step are several smaller ones. Complete them one at a time and, before you know it, you’re prepared. Here’s the big picture stuff.

1. Be on the same page with your wife or significant other. Seriously, we shouldn’t have to explain this one to you. When it comes to survival, the household must be in agreement on it’s importance or what’s really the point? Sit down and have a serious conversation.

2. Make a financial plan. With the high number of households living paycheck to paycheck, it’s even harder to make a commitment to preparation. Survival stuff is not cheap. Start adding up the cost of a generator, food supplies, etc. The question becomes “How serious are you?” Enough to divert a portion of your monthly budget to the quest?

3. Evaluate and prioritize. Since you won’t be able to buy everything at once, make a list in descending priority of what you’re going to get. Maybe instead of buying a newfangled generator right away, you can find a used wooden cook stove, perfect for warming the house and making vittles when the electricity’s out.
