TEOTWAWKI for diabetics?

TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It) is an especially frightening concept for diabetics. The infrastructure of society ruptures and life-maintaining drugs for various diseases are no longer able to be produced and transported around the country. This is a nightmare scenario for anyone with a chronic medical condition but for diabetics it might be worst of all.

Physicians have a hard time keeping a handle on the complexity of diabetes under the best of conditions so what can be done during an emergency situation?

Sorry, no magic solutions here but maybe a few things to think about.

1. Keep a 30 day supply of medications on hand at ALL times. This includes syringes, urine ketone strips, and blood ketone test strips. The thinking behind this is that the vast majority of emergencies will be short term in nature. We’re talking about weather or natural disasters that could interrupt the supply line for a few days or weeks but won’t destroy the ability to get back up to production capacity in short order.

2. If you’re a Type 2 diabetic, you should learn about the diabetic diet and diabetic menu plans right now! Do everything in your power to make sure your disease doesn’t progress to Type 1.

Type 1 diabetes requires regular injections of insulin. At present, there is no other way to keep a person alive. There is no easy way to put it except to say that in a world without insulin, Type 1’s would start to die off, advanced cases first, followed by early stage sufferers.

There are herbs that can lower blood sugar and stimulate the pancreas but this would be of no use to a Type 1 diabetic since their pancreas has stopped producing insulin altogether. If you’re a Type 2 diabetic, you might be able to function for a while with an herbal solution, maybe long enough for society to regroup.

We haven’t painted a rosy picture here but it is reality. In the event of a TEOTWAWKI scenario, make every preparation you can and pray for a quick infrastructural recovery.
