Gulf oil spill – don’t bug out yet

HolisticSurvival.comSurvivalists everywhere listened to breaking news of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill with one hand on the bug out button. Was this the beginning of the end of the world as we know it? Time to head for the wilds of Idaho and live on fresh elk meat and MRE’s while the societal meltdown kicked into high gear?

The recent drilling platform explosion and subsequent Exxon-Valdez-esque oil spew 5,000 feet below the water’s surface has been documented to death by mainstream and alternative media outlets. The platform’s owner, British Petroleum (BP), seemed at something of a loss as to how to respond as the catastrophe took off. Turns out the corporate oil giant did have a response in mind but were apparently loathe to reveal the details of their plan to seal the broken seafloor pipe shooting hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the gulf daily.

The grand scheme is this – lower a 100 ton concrete and steel box, guided by robots, over the leak to seal it off. A BP spokesman compared the endeavor to “…taking a four story building and lowering it 5,000 feet and setting it on the head of a pin.” If the device works as advertised, it could collect 85% of the leaking oil and funnel it up to be collected on the surface.

Problem is, this particular feat has never been tried or accomplished. Still, Holistic Survival doesn’t believe this latest environmental fiasco will be the end of life as we know it. Ever notice how life is nothing but one environmental “disaster” after another yet, somehow, life on good old planet earth just keeps on keeping on.
