Welcome to Holistic Survival, your key resource for protecting the people, places, and profits you care about in uncertain times. Ladies and gentlemen, your host, Jason Hartman.

Jason Hartman: Welcome to the Holistic Survival Show. This is Jason Hartman, your host, and we are talking on show number 6 today. Glad you could join us today. We’re gonna do something a little bit different today. We have a subscription based newsletter, the Holistic Survival Newsletter, and I’d like to just play the professionally voiced audio for the newsletter because when you’re a subscriber, it comes in two versions. There is a print version that’s available via PDF download and also an audio version. And we just wanted to kind of give you a free sample today of the audio version. Again, this is the first edition of the newsletter and it’s all professionally voiced, so that means you don’t have to listen to me. Anyway, I think you’ll enjoy some of the insights here. And let’s go to the professionally recorded audio newsletter, the holistic survival newsletter.

Penny Hanes: Holistic Survival, protecting the people, places, and profits you care about in uncertain times. I’m Penny Hanes.

Rich Rozzell: And I’m Rich Rozzell. Today we’re bringing you issue number 1 of Jason Hartman’s Holistic Survival newsletter.

Penny Hanes: Make sure you stop by www.HolisticSurvival.com to check out our blog, videos, and audio podcasts to stay updated about preparedness, planning first aid, terrorism, financial collapse, and so much more. Rich, why don’t you open it up by talking a little bit more about what Holistic Survival is all about?

Rich Rozzell: Well, Holistic Survival is actually your insurance for a better life. Wars continue to flare with frightening regularity around the world. Global financial markets, once sedate and predictable, spin out of control in an ever expanding cycle of chaos. Here at home in the United States, each passing day brings another industry to its knees, begging for fistfuls of bailout cash form a frantic but short sighted government addicted to spending money it doesn’t have. The ship of society is taking on water and the bailing bucket is too small. Uncertain times, that’s an understatement, but it will have to do for now.

Where do we go from here? Who knows? The real question is do you possess the critical life skills necessary to protect the people, places, and prophets you care so much about? This is the insurance for a better life that the Holistic Survival program is concerned with. Where can you look to find the truth? Not the media, that’s for sure. These self-proclaimed experts are chronically inaccurate, intellectually vacant and morally bankrupt. Their knowledge and skills are not worth the weight of the newsletter you hold in your hand. No truth there. What about our politicians? Please, don’t even think about that option. Add criminally irresponsible to their list of sins. Eyes now opening for the first time are looking around for information to trust to protect the things they love now and in the future. Holistic Survival steps into the void to rise above the pablum and rhetoric to say “There is a better way.” Take a look back at the last quarter of 2008. The whiplash of financial unrest shows us all how fast what we thought was an unassailable house of cards can come crashing down. Are you ready for what lies ahead? Do you have a plan? Do you even know what to look for? The Holistic Survival program is here to provide peace of mind as we comprehensively cover the contemporary topics necessary to survive and prosper.

This is not about the lunatic fringe – it is about practical techniques for real people like you. This is about Main Street, USA. This is you and your neighbor, yuppies and soccer moms, college students and retirees, bank presidents and convenience store clerks – none of us can afford ignorance. We’re through the looking glass darkly now, and must be ready for anything on the other side. Holistic Survival is about being prepared for modern survival with simple, realistic steps everyone can take to make the world a better place. It’s about turning problems into possibilities. It’s about stability and community and equipping, fortifying, perfecting, providing, and securing peace of mind.

It’s about self-reliance and personal responsibility.

Well next we’ll take a look at Ten Commandments of Holistic Survival. I encourage you to save this list and refer to it often.

Penny Hanes: The Ten Commandments of Holistic Survival. The notion of holistic survival is based on the idea that survival in uncertain times requires an all-encompassing or holistic approach to be successful. As a way to articulate this principal, we have prepared the ten commandments of holistic survival as a guide for preserving your personal and financial well-being in the current volatile environment. The importance of these guidelines is found in the fact that the world is becoming more complex and uncertain at a frighteningly fast pace. Thus, the strategies of yesterday are no longer suited for the environment of tomorrow.

Rich Rozzell: The Ten Commandments. Number 1, thou shalt think independently. Being prepared for the unexpected requires people to develop an aptitude for thinking outside the box. It’s important to think about the types of disasters that can occur in the area where you live and what you should do in response. In crafting your plans, it’s also important to anticipate the response of other people who are not prepared. It’s very likely that people who have not adequately prepared for disruptions or problems will resort to rather drastic measures such as looting or rioting. Thinking independently includes adequate preparation to provide for your family, along with proactively avoiding the likely focal point of increased chaos. Another important part of being prepared is to learn the emergency plans that have been established for your community. This will enable you to gain a preview of how events are likely to unfold in response to a state of chaos.

Penny Hanes: 2, thou shalt be prepared to do without. This commandment resolves around having an emergency plan for your family. This emergency plan should be inclusive of planning for going without supplies such as food and water along with going without information or direction from the political authorities. It is also important to understand that your family may not be at the same place when a chaotic situation unfolds. Furthermore, contemporary means of communication like the internet and cell phones may not be available. In this kind of a situation, communications through citizens band or CB radio and Ham radio may become the only reliable means of communication. Of these options, Ham radio is the only broad reach communication option that is outside of the traditional communication grid. Each family should develop a holistic emergency plan and be prepared for the chaos that frequently results from crisis situations.

Rich Rozzell: Number 3, thou shalt maintain control. The crux of this commandment is to stay cool and calm in a crisis situation, similar to our creating wealth commandment to maintain control of your investments. Stay positive and avoid excessive stress or panic. Panic only places extra stress on top of a highly stressful situation. Controlling your emotions will allow you to keep a level perspective and place yourself in a position of strength. Staying positive is doubly important because of the high likelihood for panic to spread out for other people in crisis. Many social problems can result with panic becomes a pandemic and people make rash, emotional decisions out of fear. Many downcast people eat, spend more money excessively, or become addicted to abusive substances during difficult times. These kinds of self-destructive behaviors need to be proactively avoided so that you will be able to maintain a cool head and clear mind.

Penny Hanes: 4, thou shalt be self-sufficient. Self-sufficiency is primarily about having the ability to provide for your own food, clothing, water, shelter, medicine, transportation, communication, power, and plumbing over an extended period of time. Most families prepare for this contingency by assembling an emergency kit. You should seek to have sufficient supplies for you and your family to survive for up to three months on your own without doctors, grocery stores, or other modern amenities. Consider what you will do if there is no medical care available in your area or if all of the hospitals were swamped. In the event that a disaster occurs, it is likely that all of the local grocery stores will be out of stock within a few hours. It is important to insure that your family is prepared for this contingency.

Rich Rozzell: Number 5, thou shalt practice the primitive. Every year you should prepare by drill or practice to return to the primitive. This means intentionally depriving yourself of the conveniences that we’ve become accustomed to. The easiest way to practice is to go on a yearly camping trip and live in the wilderness. Other ways to practice are turning off your power or water for an extended period of time. The importance of these drills is to help your family to develop the skills of rapid adaptation to abrupt changes in the amount of contemporary comforts available.

Penny Hanes: 6, thou shalt control what is put into thy own body. Health and nutrition are an important part of survival in a catastrophe, thus it is extremely important that you control what you put into your body so that it can work at top performance and heal itself adequately in a crisis situation. This is doubly important if you have a family to take care of because crisis situations will require extensive manual labor and may also see you needing to care for small children who do not have the capacity to care for themselves. One thing that can be done as a regular form of practice is to prepare meals without processed or packaged ingredients. Processed food is certainly convenient but it is not likely to be available in a crisis situation.

Rich Rozzell: Number 7, thou shalt defend thyself. It is entirely likely that a crisis situation will involve looting and rioting. It’s also likely that these activities will be heavily concentrated in urban areas with large populations of people who will be simultaneously without resources. Desperate people tend to do desperate things. Similarly, desperate measures will create lots of chaos. And this chaos is frequently concentrated in the areas where there is the most desperation. The principle areas expected to be a target of chaos are metropolitan urban areas with high levels of population density. The more remote suburban, exurban, or rural areas are not expected to be in much danger from riots due to the difficulty of organizing a mob sufficient for it to move out into the suburbs. Since it’s not practical to move out of the city for the expressed purpose of being saved from riots, it’s highly advisable for people living in dense cities to engage in very careful preparations for the contingency of a decent into chaos. It’s also possible that you’ll need to defend your family from attackers even if prudent preparations have been made. Precautions, such as security systems, martial arts training, and access to weapons, may help to ward off attackers if conditions turn desperate. It is important to not that many items that are not typically considered as weapons can be used to defend your family if necessary. Regular household items such as steak knives, tire irons, mop handles, and frying pans can be the difference between keeping your family safe and being looted by rioters.

Penny Hanes: 8, thou shalt possess and control universally needed goods and resources. The current economy depends upon currency based exchanges. In practical terms, this means that everybody accepts dollars in exchange for goods and services. Consider what will happen in the event of severe inflation. What if dollars decline in value and are no longer accepted in exchange for food, gas, or clothing? In the event that commerce regresses back to barter and trade, you will want to control goods and resources that are universally needed so that you can trade them for other things that your family requires. Typical barter items are things like non-perishable food, gasoline, medical supplies, over the counter medication, maybe even gold, silver, cigarettes, alcohol, or ammunition.

This strategy can also be extended to your investment portfolio. The most effective way is by shifting your investments away from paper assets such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, and purchasing items of universal need such as rental housing. By denominating your investment assets in things that everybody needs, it will place you in control of critical resources when they are needed the most. For more information on this strategy, visit www.JasonHartman.com

Rich Rozzell: Number 9, thou shalt protect thine own FIR, finances, identity and records. One of the first things to happen during times of chaos is the drastic rise in crime and theft. Not surprisingly, identity theft is one of the fastest growing classes of crime. Keeping your identity safe requires that some prudent precautions be taken so that you do not become an easy target. One of the first things to do is limit your internet footprint to only the providers that you fully trust. And check your credit report regularly to see if anybody is accessing your information. In addition to this, it’s important to keep all personal documents and information locked away where it cannot be easily accessed or stolen. Also make sure to shred any documents that you’re throwing away that contain personal information or account numbers. When safe guarding your identity, consider the fact that times of chaos may be dealt with by the government in a very oppressive fashion. It may become necessary to drop off the grid in order to protect your family. Take some time to consider what you will do if this course of action becomes necessary.

Penny Hanes: 10, thou shalt have a support network. Consider who you will be depending on for support in a time of chaos. Also consider who will be depending on you. If a rapid deterioration of economic and societal norms emerges, it will be very important to have a strong community of people in your local vicinity. Creating and maintaining this community is one of the strongest defenses that you can build against a crisis or catastrophe. By pulling together the skills, resources, and expertise of people in your general vicinity, it will help to organize your efforts, undertake larger tasks, and make you a less attractive target for looters. Make sure to keep networking of all the commandments. This may be the most important for protecting your family.

Rich Rozzell: Stumbling towards survival. Holistic Survival is founded on the premise of protecting the people, places, and profits you care about in uncertain times. So what do we mean by uncertain times? Good question. Lest you get the wrong impression, we’re not worried about a complete unraveling of society and all out disintegration of civilization. That’s probably not going to happen. But we do expect challenges in the near to medium term future that could seriously undermine your quality of life if you stumble blithely forward without any sort of preparation. We’re not fringe kooks, but do consider ourselves realists. The reality is that the smart citizen is going to make certain preparations, stocks of food, water, and medicine are a good idea, as is taking extra care to ensure your money is invested outside the stock market. The United States is set for an economic stumble. You might ask but aren’t we stumbling already? Yes, but it’s probably not over. There are a few reasons to believe this. Both have to do with the weakening currency. Reason number 1 is that many big investors from the United States are pulling their money out of dollar denominated assets and moving them into the international arena. A recent report by Morgan Stanley showed $400 billion dollars in assets have been moved. That’s a chunk. It means the big boys are still nervous about the dollar. Reason number 2 is the growing number of countries considering to move away from the dollar to preserve their assets. If this conga line gets very long it will have an effect on the value of the dollar and the US economy as a whole. So we don’t’ believe we’re all going to hell in a hand basket, but we don’t believe we’re out of the woods yet either. It’s time to prepare as best you can for whatever may come.

Penny Hanes: Cleaning up dirty water. Interruption of the water supply by natural disaster is a very real possibility at some point in everyone’s life. Going without water is a whole different ball game than food. A healthy person can live as long as 8 weeks without food, but only a matter of days in the absence of water. Thus, it is absolutely critical to the survival of your family that you know how to properly disinfect water in the event that you have to make an alternate source safe to consume. Boiling, this tried and true standby will kill most disease causing organisms. Boil water for about one minute, let it cool, then store it in clean containers with the cover. If the water is cloudy before you start, let it settle, and pour the clearer liquid off the top for boiling. You can also filter it through clean cloths first.

Bleach. Yes you can use bleach to disinfect your water prior to drinking. Household bleach will kill some, not all disease causing organism. It goes without saying you don’t need very much, only 8 drops per gallon of water of regular unscented liquid bleach. Add the bleach, stir it well, and let the water stand for 30 minutes. Local officials will normally make an announcement if a large water supply has become contaminated. Aren’t you glad you followed our advice and bought a portable battery powered radio so you can listen to boil water orders? And if you’ve properly stocked your food, water, emergency supply, you should have plenty of clean bottled water on hand. Good job.

Rich Rozzell: Next, we turn to the 3 Ps of holistic survival. The fundamental basics of holistic survival are found in the 3 Ps which make up the three pillars of holistic survival. These three pillars are intended to protect your people, places, and profits from harm. The reason why we call this Holistic Survival is because we recognizes the importance that family, property, and financial well-being play in our current world. Survival in and of itself may be of little comfort if all the things we care for are swept away. Because of this, we’re focusing holistic survival on helping people be more prepared for catastrophes in these uncertain times.

Penny Hanes: Protecting people. How do I protect the people I care about? Let’s start with protecting people. In practical terms, this means that you must possess the means to insure that the people you care for, such as your family and close friends, are protected from harm if social chaos ensues. The reason for this precaution is the likelihood that economic collapse will bring about rioting and looting. This type of activity tends to create social chaos, which often results in people being harmed. This harm is not always intentional, but in either event it is devastating to the people involved. The first and most effective line of defense is to avoid being in the places where the social and economic unrest is concentrated. The best analogy for this is to think about the occurrence of natural disasters. There are certain areas with higher risk of disasters than others. By anticipating where the disasters are most likely to hit, you can minimize the damage to the people you love by choosing to locate away from the anticipated impact zone. If you already live in a likely impact zone, you can still prepare plans for relocating quickly if a crisis occurs so that you will be out of town when the chaos starts. When considering the fallout from an economic collapse, it is likely that the impact zone will be the densely populated urban areas with large amounts of people who are either in poverty or near poverty. These areas are most likely to spawn riots and chaos in an economic crisis. Similarly, protecting the people you love will be best served by ensuring that you are outside of the impact zone if a crisis situation ensues.

What happens if I need to protect my family with physical force? None of us are pleased by the thought of needing to harm another human being to protect our family. But that scenario may become a reality if a chaos situation materializes. In this type of situation, the most important thing that a person can do is to be constantly aware of their surroundings. Most attackers will look for easy targets of opportunity. Because of this, many attackers can be deterred, simply by showing that you are aware and prepared. Common ways to telegraph preparedness are to regularly observe your surroundings and to walk confidently. The importance of deterrence cannot be stressed enough because physical fights are very nasty and unpleasant things. In practical terms, the only way to win a fight is to avoid it entirely since it is very likely you will be moderately to severely injured if physical force is necessary. Unfortunately some situations will come down to physical force as a means of protecting your family and the people you care about. One way to prepare for a contingency such as this is to study martial arts or other means of self-defense. However, even if you are not a martial arts expert, there are practical ways to prevail in a physical encounter that can be employed by relative novices. Popular culture frequently depicts the brandishing of firearms in response to threats, but packing heat is not the only way to protect the people in your life. If you are observing a situation and detect that it is likely to turn violent, it then becomes important to find some kind of weapon quickly. Note that many ordinary items such as high heeled lady shoes or automotive wrenches can be used as weapons if necessary. It is also important to remember that objective of a fight is not to completely subdue your opponent. The objective is to quickly inflict enough pain to make them leave so that you can escape with your loved ones before being harmed too severely. Rapid strikes to the head, eyes, throat, and groin are among the most effective ways to induce an attacker to retreat. As always, the most important thing to do is keep from panicking, stay calm, and act decisively. This may be the deciding factor that keeps your loved ones safe from harm.

B: Protecting places. How do I make sure my places are protected? The second key tenant of holistic survival is to protect the places that are important. Ultimately this means having the ability to protect your home and other property from theft, looting, and vandalism. In addition to this, it means that we must be prepared to endure disruptions in the supply of basic necessities for extended periods of time. Practically speaking, this means that prepared people should have a concentrated effort to store enough food, water, and other necessities for 30 to 90 days. This kind of preparedness will allow you to wait out a rapid price spike or a sudden shortage of necessity items.
One of the most significant advantages to this kind of preparedness is that you will not be forced into venturing out to look for supplies like many other people, thus you will not be pitched in a mad scramble for resources against everybody else.

Another advantage is that the refuge of your prepared resources will leave you free to tend to the security of your home and property. This will make you a less attractive target for looters and vandals that typically roam around looking for an easy mark. Protecting your property is about making sure that nobody will have an easy time taking things away from you. Another key to protecting your property is selecting a location to live or invest that is not in dense urban areas. By choosing to locate out in the suburbs where organizing riots is more difficult, it will make your place as a less attractive target for looters. The logic behind this is relatively simple. Why would looters and rioters travel all the way out to the suburbs when there’s a concentrated mass of targets in the city? Traveling on the open road will leave them open to being broken up by the police. But staying concentrated in narrow streets makes them harder to control, thus the most effective line of defense can be where you choose to locate. Furthermore, this strategy can be employed with your rental real estate investments as well by locating them in the suburbs. For more information and insights, visitwww.JasonHartmn.com and listen to his Creating Wealth show.

Next question, don’t I pay taxes for the police to keep me protected? Well the short answer to this question is yes. However, it’s very important to consider the likely way in which events will unfold during a catastrophe. When looting and rioting starts in the urban areas, it’ll place an extreme amount of strain on the police forces to maintain order. Consider that the resourcing model for police departments is based on the assumption that over 95% of the population will obey the law without being forced to. No city can afford to force everybody into obedience through police power, so the police departments are staffed for normal levels of activity to avoid this excessive expense. Unfortunately, this means that times of emergency, crisis, or catastrophe will find the police and fire departments dramatically overburdened and unable to respond to all of the calls they receive. In practical terms, this means that many people will need to defend themselves, acquire their own resources, and tend to their own medical needs until the crisis situation is resolved. This means that you cannot count on public safety agencies to take care of you in an emergency. It’s also a testament to the importance of the ten commandments of holistic survival and a key reason why preparedness is paramount.

Penny Hanes: Protecting profits. Why do my profits need protecting? The third key concept is that of protecting your profits. At first this may sound kind of snarky or silly, but it is very important to consider when building your investment portfolio. The importance of protecting your profits comes from the likely scenario where the government will continually inflate the currency as a means of financing its excessive and irresponsible spending. The results of this inflation will be to destroy the value of dollar denominated assets like savings, home equity, stocks, and debt. The best way to defend against this phenomenon is to structure your finances such that your assets are physical things, and your liabilities are paper obligations to financial institutions.

The reason why this protects your profits is because the inflation will inflate the value of the physical assets and destroy the value of the paper debt. The next step in this type of profit protection is to ensure that your assets are denominated in items of universal need such as housing and consumable commodities. It should be noted that housing makes a much better investment vehicle, as it can be rented out to tenants and financed with leverage. By protecting your profits in this manner, you will be placed in a very advantageous situation relative to the rest of the populace. This will help to keep you out of an inevitable mad scramble for survival when the vast multitude simultaneously realize that they will be unable to sustain their lifestyle with their current income and resources. For more information and insight, visit www.JasonHartman.com and listen to his creating wealth show.

Why we’re not gold bugs. It is certainly true that times of chaos and confusion tend to make commodities like gold and silver increase in price. In a strange way, this is a part of why we do not recommend them as an investment vehicle. Since gold and silver are extremely valuable, it is very likely that they will be confiscated by the government in exchange for worthless paper currency. The precedent for this was set by FDR in 1933, when he made it illegal to hold gold bullion and had the government confiscate all of the privately owned gold stock.

Furthermore, the value of gold and silver is being actively manipulated by the federal reserve through selling gold out of the national reserve to depress the price of gold already in the marketplace. This is being done in an attempt to limit the extent of monetary inflation that results from printing money to finance government spending. If the currency exchange system breaks down, it is likely that the most commerce will happen in terms of barter and trade instead of exchanging dollars for groceries at the store. In this type of system, transactions will most likely be a medium of exchange, an exchange of consumable items such as food and maybe alcohol, cigarettes, ammunition, or other similar products. Gold and silver may have a place in such an exchange system, but their value may be limited since neither gold or silver is directly consumed by most people. This pushes them lower on the hierarchy of necessities and may diminish their exchange value. Furthermore, since both gold and silver have a high value per ounce, they are difficult to trade in small quantities. This could create a situation where people holding gold must trade for much less than the full value of the gold, similar to a person who wants to buy a bus ticket but only has a $20 bill and cannot get change. These reasons compel us to recommend investing in other assets of universal need such as rental real estate. For more information and insight, visit www.JasonHartman.com and listen to his Creating Wealth show.

The Bottom Line. Ultimately, it is incumbent upon each of us to prepare for survival in uncertain and chaotic times. By following the three Ps of holistic survival, we will be able to protect the people, places, and profits in our lives. All of us are holding out hopes that the worst will not happen. And the free market ultimately prevails to deliver continued peace and prosperity. However, we are also strong believers in the notion that luck favors the prepared and that hoping for the bus should be accompanied by preparing for the worst. Thus, the importance of preparing early cannot be overstated since it will be too late to start when the chaos starts. The key question for each of us to ask ourselves is whether we are getting prepared. And if not, why not now?

Rich Rozzell: Finally, here are some points to remember. Chaos frequently results in people being harmed. The best defense is generally to avoid the chaos. Chaos will most likely be concentrated in dense, urban areas. Make plans to evacuate high risk areas before the chaos begins. Most attackers are looking for easy targets. Many attacks can be avoided simply by giving off the impression that you are aware and prepared. Engaging in a physical fight will most likely result in moderate to severe personal injury. Ordinary items can be used as weapons if necessary. The goal is not to subdue an attacker, but to cause him sufficient pain so that he retreats. Chaos is likely to result in looting and vandalism. Stock enough supplies to survive for 30 to 90 days. Being prepared will allow you to avoid the mad scramble for resources. Choosing to live and invest in the suburbs may help you avoid rioters and looters entirely. Crisis situations will leave the police and fire departments overstretched and under-resourced. The public agencies will not be able to help everybody in a crisis. Be prepared to take care of yourself in an emergence since the public safety agencies may not be available. Significant inflation is likely to occur as the government debases the currency to finance its spending. Inflation destroys the value of savings, stocks, home equity, and debt. Structure your finances so that your assets are physical things and your liabilities are dollar denominated debt obligations. This will cause inflation to increase the value of assets while destroying the value of your liabilities. Gold has a history of manipulation and seizure by the government. Hyperinflation could result in commerce deciding to barter and trade. Gold has limited intrinsic utility because it is not consumed by humans. Barter with gold will be inefficient because of its high value relative to other items.
