Pandemic-proof your family

Fear-mongering government agencies love to stand in front of microphones and issue a daily handwringing alert for the populace, apparently intending for us to exist in a state of perpetual fear about the next flu bug of biblical proportions. You know, some of us have things to do and can’t wrap ourselves in plastic and hide in the back of the closet until the coast is completely clear.

Neither the ebola Virus, the avian flu, or the swine flu has turned into the Bubonic Plague – we’re still here, still kicking. What are some common sense preventative measures you can take to stay healthy in the face of the flu season?

1. Wash your hands often, especially sneezing or coughing. Alcohol-based cleaners will work if soap and water aren’t available.

2. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when you sneeze. One use only with the tissue please! Throw it away afterwards.

3. Avoid close contact with sick people. Try to control your nervous eye, nose, or mouth touching quirks. That’s how diseases are spread.

4. If you get sick, stay home and limit contact with others.

It is believed that flu spreads primarily person-to-person by coughing or sneezing. Anything else you can do to keep your immune system strong is only going to help. Don’t forget – the 6th Commandment to Holistic Survival is “Thou Shalt Control What is Put into Your Body.” That means the simple act of backing of the soda and junk food consumption for a while can allow your immune system to return to a much higher level of function and maybe, just maybe, it will have a better chance staving off the mighty flu bug.

Good luck!
