Survive With Just the Items in Your Backpack

HS - Jason Hartman Income Property Investing (1)If you’re an adventurer, you’ve probably thought a bit about survival. How you might do it, the circumstances surrounding your need to survive, and what items you have on hand that might come in useful. Maybe you’ve participated in a team-building exercise or two that involved five items, a rowboat, and the people in your group—all this to say, we’re a culture that thinks a lot about how we’ll survive.

Jason Hartman has thought about it too, and with these few items, you’ll make it at least until help comes.

Dental Floss

Because it is so tough, dental floss can be used for a variety of purposes. You can make a snare to capture food (and then get it out of your teeth), use it as fishing line, or use it to raise and lower things like rescue ropes.

Cell Phone

Most of us travel with our cell phones, and it’s a good thing. Many phones contain programs and software that can be used to find your location. They also have flashlights and flashing lights that can attract attention.

Bandanna

Aside from being infinitely fashionable, a bandanna serves a number of purposes. You can use it to strain water, flag a rescuer, breath through, or bandage a wound.

Garbage Bag

This simple piece of plastic could be a lifesaver. Use it as a poncho to protect against weather, protect yourself from the sun, or make a pillow from debris on the ground. You can also use it to keep yourself from direct contact with the ground, which will preserve body heat. Or, use it as a receptacle to collect water from dew or rain.

Wrist Watch

A wrist watch (with a little know-how) can be turned into a compass. Turn the hour hand the direction of the sun and get a make shift compass. (See the Farmer’s Almanac for more info). It isn’t totally accurate, but certainly better than nothing. You may also use it to concentrate sunlight to start a fire or signal for help.

Shoelaces

Use your shoelaces to help construct a shelter, make a fire-starting device, or help climb a tree. Boot laces are best—they are durable and might be used for a variety of purposes.

With these common items, you’ll have a much better chance of survival, though we hope you’ll never need it! Remember, a little common sense goes a long way. Combine this with your lust for adventure and courage, and you can beat anything!(Image: Flickr | rust.bucket)
